Finally ...Rio

Well I have made it safely to Rio. Only having 1 hour for connecting flights at Lisbon did not prove problematic and getting through Brazilian customs was a breeze. Went for a walk around the area whilst waiting for my room to be ready. Was only out in the sun for half an hour and I am already sunburnt! When I did get into my room to unpack, I found the factor 50, slapped it on and went exploring more of Rio. Bumped into a fellow traveller on the trip and he showed me the delights of a kilo restaurant. It is like a buffet only they weigh your plate and charge you according. You can keep returning to the buffet and they will just add it to your tab. Took the metro to see the famous Copacabana Beach. Did I mention that by now it was 39 degrees. The sand was agonizingly painful and that was whilst wearing flip-flops. Had a paddle but the heat was too much - even for me. Brazil might take a bit of acclimatizing to. The trip officially starts tomorrow. We will be driving into the mountains of Teresopolis. It will also be straight out with the tents!

Zoe, I have read your blog and found it most interesting. I have been to many of the same places as you, which adds a personal touch for me. I have never been to Central America or where you are going now. I shall follow your progress with great interest. It sounds as if your accommodation will be very basic but will enable you to see such a little known and interesting part of South America. All the best for your new adventures. You may say it is your last overlander trip but such adventure penetrates your bones. I think I can safely say I doubt it will be your last. Greetings from Kiwiland. May 2019 be a memorable year for you. Enjoy, Esther.
